About Ostrov Monastery

The Ostrov Monastery was founded by Neagoe Basarab and his wife Despina, between 1518-1522.

Name Ostrov, comes from the fact that it was built on an island (Ostrov -  island) on the Olt River near the town Calimanesti.

The painting beggin in 1752 and completed in 1760, an important ornament is "golden iconostasis" from linden wood which dates exactly from the beginings of church.

In this monastery became nuns, Mrs. Despina (Neagoe's wife), with name Platonida and mother of Michael the Brave (Mihai Viteazul), who was named Teofana.

Construction of hydroelectric Calimanesti has imposed that the church with island to be raised about 6 m high, to avoid being flooded.
