About Govora Monastery

The Govora Monastery is an Orthodox monastery of nuns dedicated to the Assumption, located 5 km distance from Baile Govora.

Founded between 1436-1447 by Vlad Dracul [father of Vlad Tepes (Dracula). In 1456 Vlad Tepes donated to the monastery a bell of 250 kg.

During the reign of Vlad Tepes (Dracula), the powerful feudal Albu cel Mare (Albu the Great) is uprising and tries to remove the ruler. Vlad Tepes conquers the villages of monastery, after the battle Albu cel Mare is impaled.

During the reign of Radu cel Mare [Radu the Great (1495-1508)] monastery is repaired and decorated.

Matei Basarab has installed in 1637 at monastery, the second typography of the Romanian country.

The monastery had a defensive role in Wallachia, this can be seen from the belfry of access, which has a height of 15 m, width 2 m, firing holes, ramparts and watch road.
