About Dintr-un Lemn Monastery

Dintr-un Lemn Monastery (From a Wood Monastery) is an Orthodox monastery, a historic monument.

Founded by ruler Matei Basarab in 1640, today the church outlines the architecture of Matei Basarab.

In 1715 Stefan Cantacuzino has fully restored the Princely House and the monastery bell located inside the main entrance.

Icon of Our Lady, from which is linked the past of monastery is stored in the big church with great reverence , besides it keeps the two chandeliers from Serban Cantacuzino and Mrs. Marica Brancoveanu, three large royal icons, and another 36 smaller icons painted in the years 1833-1840 by Gheorghe Gherontie of Hurezi.

Icon of Our Lady is impressive, 1.50 m high and 1.10 m wide, in the world there are  only three such copies, the origin is unclear  "painted in IV century in Theotokos Monastery-Greece" or "icon was painted only in the second half of the sixteenth century " and "icon was made before 1453, at Byzantium or Mount Athos".
