About Cozia Monastery

The Cozia Monastery is an Orthodox monastery, situated in the Capatanii Mountains, on the banks of the river Olt , surrounded by forests of pine, oak, beech and linden.

Cozia Monastery was founded by Mircea cel Batran (Mircea the Elder), inaugurated on May 18 1388, in present it’s on the list of historical monuments.

The interior painting is made ​​between the years 1390 - 1391, but over the time, the monastery will be repaired and renovated several times, by the lords Neagoe Basarab, Radu Paisie and Constantin Brancoveanu.

On the time of Neagoe (1512 - 1521) was built the fountain that bears his name, and also, was restored the painting.

In 1706-1707, Constantin Brancoveanu built the porch.

In the Monastery Cozia are buried Mircea cel Batran (Mircea the Elder) and Teofana, mother of Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave).

The monastery has gone through  painful moments, between 1879-1893 it was transformed in prison by the authorities  and in World War I becomes stable for horses.

Last Restoration was done in 1959 by the Romanian Government.
