About Arnota Monastery

Arnota Monastery is an Orthodox monastery located in Buila-Vanturarita National Park, from Capatanii Mountains, declared historical monument.

Founded by Prince Matei Basarab in 1633-1634 and repaired by Constantin Brancoveanu in 1706, this monastery, through painting, architecture and sculpture, can be considered one of the most important historical and religious art in the country.

In 1706, Constantin Brancoveanu has built after renovation the famous porch with tower in his own style. Has restored the original painting and iconostasis, ​​a real masterpieces.

The painting is preserved in its original form from 1644 and is due to Stroe from Targoviste.

The tombs of the ruler Matei Basarab and his father Danciu, are located in this monastery. Danciu, brave an important soldier of the first unifier of the Romanian Country, Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave).

Legend says that Matei Basarab was chased by Ottomans, he retreats to a mountain slope and tell, if he escapes, will set up a monastery in this place.
