About The Citadel of Sighisoara

UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The Historic Centre of Sighisoara (Sighisoara Citadel) is the oldest historic center of the town built in the 12th century by Saxon colonists under the Latin name Castrum Sex. It is an inhabited medieval citadel that, in 1999, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its 850-year-old testament to the history and culture of the Transylvanian Saxons.

Sighisoara is the birthplace of Vlad III the Impaler (Dracula or by the original name Vlad Tepes). Sighisoara hosts, every year, a medieval festival where arts and crafts blend with rock music and stage plays.

The citadel is surrounded by a wall of 930 m whose initially height was about 4m. Subsequently, the wall height was increased in some places up to 14 m. The wall was built between the fourteenth century and the seventeenth century as a protection against Turkish attacks. The wall had 14 towers, of which 9 are preserved until today. The towers functioned as the headquarters of the various craft guilds.
