About The Citadel of Severin

The Severin Citadel was built between 1040-1095, by order of Ladislau I, as a citadel against the nomadic Asian peoples.

Later it is extended by the Hungarian Kingdom as a military strategic center against Ivan Alexandru.

In time, the citadel will have a series of wars between princes from Wallachia, Hungaria and Bulgaria starting with Litovoi, Barbat and Basarab I.

For Wallachia, Severin citadel, was a bastion of defense against Ottoman expansion.

In the period of maximum development, the citadel had 6 defense towers, two concentric stone waves and a water ditch of 3 m deep.

Those who defended the Severin citadel, bore the name Ban of Severin.
