Wooden Church from Budesti Josanishow map
About Wooden Church from Budesti Josani

UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The church of Saint Nicholas ("Lower Budesti") in the village of Budesti, Maramures region is representative of the characteristic wooden churches of Maramures with double eaves.

The wooden church at Budesti Josani was dated by an inscription on the portal from 1643. Unfortunately the inscription was lost during the enlargement of the entrance in 1923. The inscription was verified dendrochronologically and the log structure was firmly dated from the winter 1642-43, i.e. the moment the timbers were felled.

Inside of the church it keeps armor Pintea Brave (Pintea Viteazul), legendary outlaw is said that he left himself in the care of church,  armor and helmet after fighting with Tatars in 1717 .

The church also keeps a large number of icons from wood dating XVII-XVIII, and it seems even older, and a valuable collection of icons on glass.
