About Barnova Monastery

Orthodox monastery, founded by ruler Miron Barnovschi-Movila and completed by ruler Eustratie Dabija.

Ensemble of Barnova monastery is a historical monument and includes:

The church "St. George" - dating from the period 1626-1629.

Cells - dating from 1728.

Ruins from inside - dating from the seventeenth century.

Tower gate - dating from the seventeenth century.

Defense wall - dating from the seventeenth century.

In 1626, Miron Barnovschi-Movila starts building the church, fails to complete because in 1629 is dethroned and is forced to retreat in Poland. Returns to the throne in 1633, but is arrested by the Ottoman Porte, after intrigues of Vasile Lupu. Sultan Murad the IV, offered him life if passes to Islam. "Miron Voda did not want to renounce to Christian faith" so  in July 1633 was beheaded by the Ottoman Porte. The church will be completed in 1629 by ruler Eustratie Dabija.

The monastery was renovated in 1728 by ruler Grigore II Ghica.
