About The Fortified Church of Darjiu

Unesco World Heritage
Fortified church of Darjiu is a historical and architectural monument of XIII-XIV century, one of the six fortified churches included in UNESCO list of world cultural heritage.

Raising the current building began in XIV century and compleated in the fifteenth century, the fortifications being lifted in the sixteenth century, comprising five towers, bell towers and defensive walls of stone.

The fortress has an area of ​​1.852 square meters, the church being in the middle of it. The protection wall has 5 meters height and two gates. During the invasion of the Ottoman, Turks who entered the first gate remaind locked inside the fortress, being burned with hot pitch.
