About Citadel of Adamclisi

The citadel dates back to year 106. It was built on the place where  the final battle between Dacians and Romans happend. It is considered the largest roman civil settlement from Dobrogea.

Was inhabited by veterans who participated in the war for the conquest of Dacia by Trajan. The citadel reached the rank of "municipium" during Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211).

Destroyed by the goths, the citadel was rebuilt from the ground up, through the care of Emperor Constantine the Great, being endowed with new defensive walls. In 587 is destroyed by avars invasions  and it was finally abandoned.

Tropaeum Traiani monument was raised in honor of the Roman Emperor Trajan between 106-109 to commemorate the Roman victory over the Dacians, in 102.
