About Mud Volcano

In Romania, the most famous and spectacular mud volcanoes are in Buzau Subcarpathians, between localities Berca and Arbanasi.
The term mud volcano or mud dome are used to refer to formations created by geo-excreted liquids and gases, although there are several different processes which may cause such activity. Temperatures are much cooler in these processes than found at igneous volcanoes.

About 86% of the gas released from these structures is methane, with much less carbon dioxide and nitrogen emitted. Ejected materials are often a slurry of fine solids suspended in liquids which may include water, which is frequently acidic or salty, and hydrocarbon fluids.

The objective, in terms of landscape, is the unusual landscape - created by eruptions of marne-clay paste and continuously remodeled by rain.

In the area of Berca and Arbanasi are located 3 protected areas of national interest:

Paclele Beciu

Paclele Mari

Paclele Mici

Compared to Paclele Mari and Paclele Mici, Paclele from Beciu are spread over a much smaller area, but their activity is more intense. Because of the very liquid mud, cones are slightly raised.
