About Bucharest

Bucharest (Bucuresti) is the capital of Romania. It is the largest city in Romania, with a population of over 1.900.000 inhabitants (2013). Bucharest is  the tenth city in the European Union, as population.

The city is attested in September 21, 1459 by Vlad Tepes (Dracula or Vlad the Impaler), ruler of Romanian Country (Wallachia). Dambovitei Citadel, as it appears in the early years, had a strategic role to oversee the road leading to Giurgiu.

Bucharest was elected on 14 October 1465 by the ruler Radu the Handsome as a princely residence. During the years 1558-1559, at the Old Court is built the Princely Church, founded by ruler Mircea Ciobanbu. Today is the oldest church in town preserved in its original form.

In 1659, under the rule of Gheorghe Ghica, Bucharest became the capital of the Romanian Country.
Currently, Bucharest is known for the world's largest civilian building, the most expensive administrative building and the heaviest building in the world. The Palace of the Parliament (Palatul Parlamentului) was designed and nearly completed by the Ceausescu regime as the seat of political and administrative power. Nicolae Ceausescu named it the House of the Republic (Casa Republicii), but many Romanians call it the People's House (Casa Poporului). The People’s House was built between 1984 - 1989, the building's project was made by Anca Petrescu, a young architect who at that time was 28 years old.
