About Negru Voda Monastery

Orthodox monastery, founded in 1215, by Negru Voda Voivode, founder and first ruler of the Romanian Country.

The second founder of the monastery is Matei Basarab (1635-1638) which restores the church from the ground. Also during of Matei Basarab is built a bell tower, 35 meters high, with gate function and military fortification.

The monastery is affected by the earthquake in 1802 and rebuilt in 1826 by ruler Grigore Ghica.

In Negru Voda Monastery are buried rulers Basarab I and Nicolae Alexandru.

Negru Voda Monastery is the most important monastic ensemble in Muscel.
