About The Lutheran Church of Sebes

The church was built somewhere in 1150 by german colonists settled in Sebes. In the first phase it was built a romanesque basilica, but in 1242 the Mongol invasion destroyed the city.

After invasion, the old romanesque basilica with the two towers was rebuilt it, in a new early Gothic style and  raised up on the ruins of the initial two towers. In 1485, king Matthias Corvinus granted privileges to complete a series of fortifications. The most significant changes are at the enclosure of the church whose wall is raised.

The 4 towers located on the roof of the clock tower, signify that the city had the right to give the death penalty.
